Chaser is now world famous as the dog who knows more than 1,000 words, the largest known vocabulary of any animal except humans. Besides proper nouns, she knows verbs, adverbs and prepositions. She's learned that common nouns can identify different things. Ball could mean any round or bouncy object, Frisbee any spinning disk or ring. And she can make inferences. If asked to fetch a new toy with a word she's never heard, she'll pick the toy out from a pile of familiar ones

Border collies are herders, bred hundreds of years ago to work with sheep, Pilley said. If a farmer's dog didn't listen to the farmer, the farmer didn't breed the dog. Through selective breeding, border collies gradually began to pay more attention to the words themselves.

Border Collie History

The breed called the Border Collie was developed in the area known as the Anglo Scottish border of the United Kingdom.  The Border Collie belongs to the working dog category and they excell at herding sheep.

Recognized worldwide as the premier sheepherding dog, known for its obedience, trainability and natural appearance.  The Border Collie was given Herding Group designation and became eligible for full recognition status on October 1, 1995.

Wiston Cap (b. 28 Sep. 1963) is the dog that the International Sheep Dog Society portrays in the characteristic Border Collie herding pose. He was a popular stud dog in the history of the breed, and his bloodline can be seen in most bloodlines of the modern day Collie.

The Border Collie is the most intelligent dog in the world.
